Season 1, Episode 11

Title: Paris is Burning

Finally, a title that has another meaning (or two!). I was over the expositional titles. While the title obviously refers to Paris turning into a mondo bitch and telling all of Chilton about Max and Lorelai, there are a couple other references buried here. Paris is Burning was a 1990 documentary about a community of drag queens living in NY. It could also be a reference to the phrase “fiddle while Rome burns”, which means to do something trivial or irresponsible during an emergency.  The phrase comes from the myth that the Roman emperor Nero played his violin during the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD.

Summary: Max makes Osso Buco. Lorelai tries Proust. The Girls go ice skating. Lorelai is getting attached so she cha-chas away. Paris is burning so she spreads the flame. Lorelai and Max get caught kissing at Chilton, Emily finds out. Sookie finally asks Jackson out.

Season 1, Episode 10

Title: Forgiveness and Stuff

There’s a lot of forgiving in this episode. Lorelai forgives Rory and Dean. Emily and Lorelai forgive each other. We forgive Luke of any future wrongdoings because of his adorable Santa Burger. It would be a really feel-good episode if it weren’t for the hospital trip, ya know?

Summary:  Lorelai and Rory haven’t made up yet. Neither have Lorelai and Emily. Lorelai is uninvited to Christmas dinner which means no apple tarts. Narcolepsy Boy gets caught at Rory’s window. Luke shows his love with a Santa Burger. Richard has a heart attack scare.

Season 1, Episode 9

Title: Rory’s Dance

Another expositional title. Rory has a dance at school and she invites her maybe-boyfriend Dean.

Summary:  Emily reads her Chilton Newsletter, Lorelai does not. Rory takes Dean to the dance, much to Tristan’s dismay. Paris brings her cousin. Madeline’s mom can make soup. Louise discovers Dean is 6’1″. Lorelai throws out her back and Emily makes her mushed banana on toast. Rory and Dean sleep on Miss Patty’s yoga mats. Lorelai and Emily freak.

Title: Love and War and Snow

The Girls cover the diverse topics of love (Rory, Lane), war (Luke), and snow (Lorelai). Not very inventive for a title, but it’s accurate.

Summary: Lane joins Marching Band and the Rich Bloomingfeld Fan Club. Rory has the cookies and the love and the Dean. Mr. Medina is sacrificed by the snow gods and ends up in Stars Hollow, much to Lorelai’s pleasure and Luke’s dismay. Taylor and the townspeople hold their annual Battle of Stars Hollow reenactment. Old softy Luke brings them cocoa and coffee. Rory introduces the Gilmores to frozen pizza.  Continue reading
