Season 1, Episode 5

Title: Cinnamon’s Wake

Not a stripper – it’s a cat. Spoiler alert but Morey and Babette’s cat dies in this one and the Girls help throw a wake. It’s pretty adorable but we do miss Cinnamon. It could be a reference to Finnegan’s Wake by James Joyce or the Irish ballad the book is named after, one that has been covered by numerous bands since it arose in the 1850s.

Summary: Claudia dies. So does Cinnamon. The girls throw a wake for the cat and blow off the funeral for the cousin. Emily has an aneurysm. Sookie does her best Henry the Eighth impression. Mr. Medina and Dean both take a chance on a Gilmore girl. Continue reading

Season 1, Episode 4

Title: The Deer Hunters

The title is referring to the 1978 film The Deer Hunter, an epic war drama about Vietnam. It starred Robert DeNiro, Christopher Walken, and Meryl Streep. Luckily, Rory’s encounter with the deer was a little less disturbing than this film.

Summary: The Girls debate school-supply personalities. Rory gets a D… the horror! Lorelai and Max have their meet-cute. Sookie has a “magic” risotto conniption. The Girls sleep at a right-angle all night so chaos ensues. Rory gets hit by a deer (really) and misses her test. Il Duce gives one of his sexist, white-haired soliloquies. All ends well – with a call from Max. Continue reading

Season 1, Episode 3

Title: Kill Me Now

Is it the hat? The golfing? The incestuous twin wedding? Emily’s veiled attempts at manipulation? The whose-boobs-are-bigger argument? Whatever it is – Kill Me Now seems like an appropriate phrase for this episode.

Summary: Rory has to pick a “Team Sport”. Richard takes her to the Club. Lorelai is in a Double Mint commercial for a creepy twin wedding, while her potential collects dust. Michel is afraid of the swans but more afraid of Drella. Kirk is still pretending to be not-Kirk. Rory wears a stupid hat. We meet the “most odious woman alive”.

Side note: this episode was directed by Adam Nimoy – Spock’s son himself! Adam is actually married to actress Terry Farrell who played one of the main characters on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, though she never acted alongside Nimoy Sr.

Season 1, Episode 2

Title: The Lorelais’ First Day at Chilton

They’re both named Lorelai, and they are both overwhelmed on their first day at Chilton. It’s very self-explanatory. But they do duplicate this title when Rory goes to Yale (Season 4, Episode 2). I appreciate the consistency.

Paige’s Summary: Lorelai’s fuzzy clock doesn’t purr and she wears Daisy Dukes. Chaos ensues. Rory becomes a Mary. Paris is our new perfectionist obsession. The Gilmore’s get DSL so now there is no time for sandwiches. Lorelai thinks Luke is cute. Continue reading

Season 1, Episode 1

Title: Pilot

Nothing quippy to say about this boring title. They get better though, I promise.

Summary: Lorelai drinks lots of coffee. Oh wait, so does Rory. Luke is grumpy. Oh wait, so are Richard and Emily. Rory does the plaid skirt thing. Lane is a closet audiophile. Dean doesn’t have a motorcycle. Sookie fixes the peach sauce. We are blessed with Friday Night Dinners. Continue reading

Season 7, Episode 4

Title: ‘S Wonderful, ‘S Marvelous

Funny Face! The jazz standard “‘S Marvelous” was sung by Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face, about a bookish girl getting plucked into the world of high society (ahem, Rory!). Coincidentally, it was also sung by Audrey Hepburn and Gene Kelly in An American in Paris. Fitting for Lorelai and Christopher’s Parisian lovefest (Season 7, Episode 7).

Summary: Lorelai and Christopher fight Snakes on a Plane, then go on a 1950s date. Menace-to-society Emily Gilmore finally gets nabbed. Rory makes popcorn with her new girlfriends. April likes avocado pits and being annoying. Luke goes to Target.

Season 7, Episode 3

Title: Lorelai’s First Cotillion

It’s not really a pop culture reference, but more of a functional episode title. A Cotillion is a formal ball to begin the training and presentation of debutantes to society. It’s mostly for middle schoolers to teach them proper social etiquette and such. Seems right up Emily’s alley.

Summary: Lorelai has an existential crisis over Pop Tarts. Rory tries sexting. Emily is a cotillion drill sergeant. Michel is humiliated without a boutonniere. Zach is cool with the whole baby thing. Continue reading

Season 7, Episode 1

Title: The Long Morrow

An episode of the The Twilight Zone that aired January 10, 1964. An astronaut and his girlfriend at home age at different speeds for 40 years. “That’s true love.” Starring Robert Lansing, who was also in Star Trek, young Luke’s favorite show according to Mia (See Season 2, Episode 8).

Summary: The girls try racketball. Rory gets a weird rocket. Lorelai fucks it up. Luke is crushed. Taylor puts up a traffic camera. Kirk is Evel Knievel. Paris frightens the next generation. Continue reading

Season 7, Episode 2

Title: That’s What You Get, Folks, For Makin’ Whoopee

A 1929 Song by Eddie Cantor that’s been covered many times by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. The song was also featured in an episode of Bunheads, another Amy Sherman-Palladino classic that was cut too short. It’s one of my favorite dances in that series. Here’s a video.

Summary: Loralei and Rory visit crazy Asia. Lane’s sick with a 9-month parasite. Kirk opens Kirk’s. Liz and TJ are into White Russians. Luke is fine. Continue reading
