Season 1, Episode 15

Title: Christopher Returns

Christopher is back, or for us watching it’s our first time meeting the person responsible for 50% of Rory’s DNA. We also find out it’s his first time visiting Stars Hollow, so not really a return.

Summary: Christopher rides in on a motorcycle, the scourge of Taylor Doose. Rory tries to bury him in blankets, then shows him her Dean. The town tries to decide if he’s more Brad Pitt or Billy Crudup. Straub and Francine make a true villain entrance. Lorelai experiences Jose Cuervo’s magical powers then has to rectify a ratty transgression. Christopher can’t afford to buy a book but still thinks he can marry Lorelai. Offspring sucks and Metallica rules.

Title: That Damn Donna Reed

Another straight-forward title, reflecting one of the main plot points of the episode – The Donna Reed Show.

Summary: The girls eat pizza and watch the incomparable Donna Reed Show. Dean has salad with a side of misogyny. Lorelai convinces Luke to spruce with a new coat of paint. The Gilmores won’t go to Europe in the spring. Dean doubles down on the oppressed housewife joke. Luke and Lorelai get close behind the counter. Season 1, Episode 13

Title: Concert Interruptus

I’m pretty sure this is referring to coitus interruptus, the medical term for the pull-out “contraception” method, which is the funniest thing I’ve ever heard.

Summary: Stars Hollow is having a rummage sale, in Lorelai’s living room apparently. Sookie gets tickets to a Gilmore favorite – The Bangles. Paris, Madeline, and Louise come to Stars Hollow to work on a project and get sucked into the Gilmore web. Lorelai inexplicably offers Sookie’s tickets to the girls because she is inconsiderate. At the concert, Madeline and Louise predictable cause some trouble following some cool guy wannabes. Rory and Paris bond over their squareness. Meanwhile, Luke and Lorelai continue building their sexual tension after Luke flips out on her for taking his Ex’s hoodie from the rummage sale.

Season 1, Episode 12

Title: Double Date

This one’s a double, double date. Sookie and Jackson + Lorelai and Rune. Lane and Todd + Rory and Dean. It’s a doozy.

Summary: The girls have a morning pop tart and coffee action sequence. Lane wants to date Todd. Lorelai hates Walmart. Sookie date preps for Jackson. Rune can’t get over Lorelai’s shoe size, and ruins the whole evening. Lorelai and Luke play poker but are interrupted by an angry Mrs. Kim. Lane and Rory get busted. Sookie and Jackson have the whole ‘first date, beginning of the relationship’ glow. Luke asks Lorelai out, kind of. Continue reading

Season 1, Episode 11

Title: Paris is Burning

Finally, a title that has another meaning (or two!). I was over the expositional titles. While the title obviously refers to Paris turning into a mondo bitch and telling all of Chilton about Max and Lorelai, there are a couple other references buried here. Paris is Burning was a 1990 documentary about a community of drag queens living in NY. It could also be a reference to the phrase “fiddle while Rome burns”, which means to do something trivial or irresponsible during an emergency.  The phrase comes from the myth that the Roman emperor Nero played his violin during the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD.

Summary: Max makes Osso Buco. Lorelai tries Proust. The Girls go ice skating. Lorelai is getting attached so she cha-chas away. Paris is burning so she spreads the flame. Lorelai and Max get caught kissing at Chilton, Emily finds out. Sookie finally asks Jackson out.

Season 1, Episode 10

Title: Forgiveness and Stuff

There’s a lot of forgiving in this episode. Lorelai forgives Rory and Dean. Emily and Lorelai forgive each other. We forgive Luke of any future wrongdoings because of his adorable Santa Burger. It would be a really feel-good episode if it weren’t for the hospital trip, ya know?

Summary:  Lorelai and Rory haven’t made up yet. Neither have Lorelai and Emily. Lorelai is uninvited to Christmas dinner which means no apple tarts. Narcolepsy Boy gets caught at Rory’s window. Luke shows his love with a Santa Burger. Richard has a heart attack scare.

Season 1, Episode 9

Title: Rory’s Dance

Another expositional title. Rory has a dance at school and she invites her maybe-boyfriend Dean.

Summary:  Emily reads her Chilton Newsletter, Lorelai does not. Rory takes Dean to the dance, much to Tristan’s dismay. Paris brings her cousin. Madeline’s mom can make soup. Louise discovers Dean is 6’1″. Lorelai throws out her back and Emily makes her mushed banana on toast. Rory and Dean sleep on Miss Patty’s yoga mats. Lorelai and Emily freak.

Season 1, Episode 8

Title: Love and War and Snow

The Girls cover the diverse topics of love (Rory, Lane), war (Luke), and snow (Lorelai). Not very inventive for a title, but it’s accurate.

Summary: Lane joins Marching Band and the Rich Bloomingfeld Fan Club. Rory has the cookies and the love and the Dean. Mr. Medina is sacrificed by the snow gods and ends up in Stars Hollow, much to Lorelai’s pleasure and Luke’s dismay. Taylor and the townspeople hold their annual Battle of Stars Hollow reenactment. Old softy Luke brings them cocoa and coffee. Rory introduces the Gilmores to frozen pizza.  Continue reading

Season 1, Episode 7

Title: Kiss and Tell

Apparently, Rory doesn’t “Kiss and Tell” – at least not to Lorelai.

Summary: The Girls don’t do laundry. Luke fights the Autumn mob mentality. Rory’s got kissed! And she shoplifted! But Lorelai only finds out through Mrs. Kim. Luke catches Lorelai spying on the new kid, while he smugly bags groceries. Rory and Lorelai rent Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and pick up massive amounts of junk food at Doose’s. Lorelai invites Dean over for movie night and Rory flips. But it all ends with a kiss.  Continue reading

Season 1, Episode 6

Title: Rory’s Birthday Parties

This one is pretty self-explanatory: Rory has two birthday parties.

Summary: Emily serves pudding, a major peace offering. Rory turns 16 and gets two parties, one slightly better than the other. Lorelai takes Emily shopping for Barbara Hutton. Burger Boy proposes, then brings ice. Jackson makes a ras-quat. The Gilmores finally visit Stars Hollow. Richard discovers he is an “Autumn”.  Continue reading
